SynopsisTulare Lake, once the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, was drained by 19th-century settlers. Its absence gave rise to fertile fields, now some of the world’s most valuable agricultural land. In this visual essay, the ghost of the former lake lingers as machinery, animals, and humans traverse the dry valley, searching for water in a landscape shaped by loss.
